Puerto Princesa Airport Expansion in Full Swing

Sokor provides $71.612-M loan for Puerto Princesa Airport rehab

MANILA - South Korea will provide a $71.612 million loan to finance the rehabilitation of the Puerto Princesa Airport, the Department of Finance said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the DOF said both parties signed the loan agreement on August 23, with Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima representing the Philippines and Export-Import Bank of Korea Chairman and President Yong Hwan Kim for South Korea.
The loan would be coursed through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund.
The project aims to expand the Puerto Princesa Airport through the construction of a new passenger terminal with facilities as well as the construction of a new access road, improvement of the runway and provision of navigational aids to accommodate increased domestic and international flights.
The Department of Transportation and Communications will implement the project.
Besides boosting Palawan's tourism prospects, the project would revitalize the transport and trade linkages among participants of the BIMP-East Asean Growth Area, which groups Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

DMCI Power bags contract to supply Palawan, plans diesel-fed facility

MANILA - The power generation unit of the Consunji group won the right to supply Palawan's electricity requirements.
Nestor D. Dadivas, DMCI Power Corp. president, told reporters that the company will put up a 27-megawatt diesel plant in the tourist hub after successfully bidding for the power supply of local distribution utility, Palawan Electric Cooperative.
"They said we have to supply by September 2013. We will complete it by [then]," he said.
Paleco had auctioned off the contract to supply 25-megawatts of generating capacity to replace its lapsed supply deal with National Power Corp. amid a projected growth in demand.
DMCI Power offered P9.38 per kilowatt-hour.
Besides the diesel plant, the company may also put up two 15-megawatt coal plants on the island in 2013 and 2014, depending on Paleco's growth forecast, Dadivas said.
The proposed coal plant will serve as N-1 contingency or back-up in case the diesel plant trips or is cut from the Palawan mini-grid.
Palawan's supply has been tight as of late owing to delays in the bidding of the new supply contract, which was earlier blocked by a spurned bidder.
Without the additional capacity, Paleco had to call on big customers to voluntarily switch off from the grid the past two months as a stop gap measure after the plants of current suppliers, Palawan Power Generation Inc. and Delta P, Inc., broke down.

Puerto Princesa Underground River Now A Protected Wetland

Puerto Princesa Underground River now a protected wetland
By Rhodina Villanueva (The Philippine Star) Updated July 21, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

MANILA, Philippines - The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) has been included in the global list of “Wetlands of International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, according to Environment Secretary Ramon Paje, making the popular tourist destination a protected area.
The Ramsar Convention is an inter-governmental treaty of 162 countries aimed at international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Among the Philippine wetlands in the list is the Agusan Marsh, where “Lolong” – officially recognized as the world’s largest crocodile – was caught last year.

Paje on Thursday said he received a letter from Lew Young, senior regional advisor for Asia-Oceania of the Ramsar Convention Secretariat, stating that the PPUR met the criteria and would soon be included in its official list. The approval was made at the 11th Meeting of the Conference of Parties of the Ramsar Convention in Bucharest, Romania from July 6 to 13.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was represented by undersecretary for field operations Demetrio Ignacio Jr.
Paje said being in the list of Ramsar designated sites would bring the PPUR increased publicity and prestige as an important global area of ecology, botany, zoology and hydrology critical for sustaining human life.

“The PPUR would also be entitled to various forms of support for its conservation and wise use, including information and expert advice on its management in accordance with internationally accepted standards,” Paje said.

He added that financial support may also be expected, possibly from the Convention’s assistance programs or through multilateral support agencies.
The DENR, through its Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, submitted the nomination of PPUR to the Ramsar Convention in Switzerland based on a resolution of the Puerto Princesa City government on Dec. 22, 2011.
The PPUR was also a declared National Geological Monument by the National Committee on Geological Sciences, and a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Camella Homes gets brand award from Reader’s Digest

Camella Homes, the flagship unit of Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc., has been named one of the winners of the 2012 Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Gold Award in the property developer category in the Philippines.

Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, with 1,000 respondents from each country for a total of 8,000 respondents.

For the past 14 years, the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards has established a reputation as the premier consumer-based international measure of brand preference.

Eighty-three percent of respondents in Asia agree that the results of the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands survey help them make their purchase decisions. Among the respondents, 64 percent said that they are more likely to buy a brand when they next purchase such kind of product, if that brand has been named a Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand.

The consumer poll for the 2012 awards was conducted simultaneously across Asia in October 2011.

Respondents were aged 20, or above, with secondary, or higher level of education and belonging to the top 50 percent of the population by household income.

The survey covered 43 categories for each country, divided into 11 business lines: Finance, telecom, services, retail, household products, information technology, consumer electronics, luxury or personal products, automobile-related, food and beverage, and health and personal care. Property developers were placed under the services group.

Camella is the subsidiary that caters to the mid-market segment of Vista Land & Lifescapes, the country’s largest homebuilder. It has been operating for 36 years and has built more than 250,000 homes.

The homebuilder maintains a strong presence in Mega Manila and 28 other key provincial destinations and 56 cities and municipalities, and continues to expand to other regions.

Palawan among world's top holiday destinations - Vogue-UK

Palawan among world's top holiday destinations - Vogue-UK

By Mayen Jaymalin (The Philippine Star) Updated July 17, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Tourism (DOT) believes more international tourists, including those from the United Kingdom, will be coming to visit the Philippines with Palawan having been cited as one of the top holiday destinations around the world.
Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez said Philippine tourism is expected to benefit from the recognition of Ariara Island in Calamian, Palawan as the number one holiday destination in the Vogue-UK magazine to be released next month.

Aside from Vogue, Ariara was also featured in various magazines in the United Kingdom like Times Magazine, which hailed it as the “Best Private Island Resort.”
It further described Ariara as “a Philippine island of such prettiness that you almost expect Johnny Depp to pop out with a parrot on his shoulder.”
Other magazines, The Independent’s and the Evening Standard, tagged Ariara as one of the best islands/places to visit this year.

Other UK magazines which featured the private island destination were Angels and Urchins, Harrods Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, The Spectator, Wine and Dine, Urbanollogy, and Tatler.
The luxurious and spacious private getaway has attracted and welcomed a number of high-profile groups with its all-inclusive package of exclusivity, relaxation, 24-hour service, excellent cuisine, and a host of amenities both for the laidback and the adventurous.
Various magazines said Ariara is the ultimate “off the beaten track” destination where the structures are contemporary in style and have been designed with sensitivity to the environment.

The resort’s website says it has eight spacious villas and beach cottages situated along Ariara’s 600-meter white sand beach with uninterrupted views of the sea and neighboring islands.
All bedrooms have private terraces and gardens, dotted with hanging chairs and hammocks. Many have vaulted ceilings, four poster-style beds, walk-in wardrobes, enormous bathrooms, and open-air showers.
Every item of furniture in Ariara has been designed, made, and upholstered in-house by local carpenters and craftsmen in the island’s own workshops or outsourced to Filipino artisans. Materials were sourced locally and all furnishings were created using traditional methods: marble bath hand-carved from single blocks of Romblon marble, wooden bath made using traditional boat-building techniques, local wood and rattan cushions made from tribal fabrics in Mindanao, and intricate wooden chests by indigenous Palawan woodcarvers.

Ariara’s decorative flair is said to be accentuated by striking wall hangings, heliographs and ceramics made by talented Filipino artist Ugu Bigyan.
“What is remarkable is that the entire resort is a testament to the unique artistry and skills of Filipino designers and artisans. The use of local materials and traditional techniques serves as good advertising for Filipino craftsmanship and world-class products. Tourism is not just about counting tourist arrivals. More importantly, it is about building opportunities on the ground and improving lives in communities in very real places,” Jimenez said.
According to Jimenez, the resort’s properly planned development and low density show the owners’ respect for the environment.

“We want to see more of this type of investment which supports the principles of responsible, ethical, and sustainable tourism,” he said.
The website also related that one British guest to the island said she had to pinch herself to be sure that the unique mixture of stunning beauty, cosseting luxury, and peace from anyone’s agenda other than our own wrapped in the friendliest of support teams were all real.
UK remains to be a key generator of tourist arrivals to the Philippines with the market posting 104,466 visitors last year.

DEVELOPER Robinsons Land Corp. is expanding its budget hotel operations to the provinces by opening a GoHotels.ph branch in Puerto Princesa City next month, a press statement showed on Wednesday.

The 108-room GoHotels.ph Puerto Princesa--Robinsons Land’s first GoHotels.ph branch outside Metro Manila following the 223-room GoHotels.ph Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong City--will bank on the popularity of Puerto Princesa City as an attractive national tourist destination both for local and foreign visitors.

"We are very excited with our newest venture, most specially that Puerto Princesa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines," says Elizabeth Gregorio, GoHotels.ph general manager, in a press statement.

Puerto Princesa City, the capital of Palawan province, is home to the Puerto Princesa Underground River, which was recently listed in the “New Seven Wonders of the World” by the international New7Wonders movement.

DA allots P594 million for irrigation, agri projects in Palawan

DA allots P594 million for irrigation, agri projects in Palawan
The Philippine Star) Updated January 23, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture is allocating P594-million worth of irrigation projects, farm machinery and inputs, and fishery initiatives in Palawan, to help make the province sufficient in rice, major staples, fishery and marine products.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the projects include the construction of the P498-million Ibato-Iraan small reservoir irrigation project that will irrigate 1,600 hectares and will benefit 425 farmers in Aborlan town, covering four barangays (Sagpangan, Maligaya, Ibato and Iraan) in Palawan.
Alcala led the groundbreaking for the irrigation project last Jan. 16. He was joined by Palawan Governor Abraham Kahlil Mitra, Agriculture assistant secretary and national rice program coordinator Dante de Lima, National Irrigation administrator (NIA) Antonio Nangel, DA region 4B director Cipriano Santiago, NIA 4B acting regional manager Conrado Cardenas Jr., and Aborlan Mayor Jaime Ortega.
NIA administrator Nangel said the project involves the construction of a dam that can store about 2.4 million cubic meters of water.
“We will finish the project in two to three years. Then, we will also develop the reservoir or impounded area into a fish pond and park for eco-tourism. We may also look for partners to develop it into a source of hydro-electric power,” Nangel said.

Construction of Puerto Princesa international airport to start 2012—Roxas
By: Paolo G. Montecillo
Philippine Daily Inquirer 9:04 pm
Monday, December 19th, 2011

MANILA, Philippines—The construction of a new international airport in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, will start by late 2012, boosting the province’s aim to become one of the country’s most visited tourist destinations.
Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II on Monday announced Malacañang’s approval of the project, so far the biggest project being handled by President Aquino’s former running mate.
The construction of a new airport will be funded using overseas development assistance (ODA) or aid financing from foreign government lenders.
Roxas said the Department of Transportations and Communications would bid out the contract to come up with an engineering design in January and finalize details about the project’s financing with the Korean government by the middle of 2012.
He said his target for the start of construction of the project is late 2012.
Under the government’s PPP website, the project aims to develop the Puerto Princesa International Airport into a facility that conforms to safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
